How are customs/duties/taxes/VAT handled for international orders?

Kickstarter rewards are required by law (to the best of my knowledge) to be declared on customs forms as merchandise. This is how I handle the shipments.

The rewards will be listed at the price of the reward you’ve chosen. Any add-ons your purchase as part of the backer survey will also be listed at the amount they were paid for.

If your country’s postal laws or regulations require payment of customs/duties/taxes/VAT for shipments originating in the U.S., then you will be most likely be required to do so for the Kickstarter rewards.

Please educate yourself of the postal laws and requirements of your country in regards to international shipments originating in the United States before pledging. You will be responsible for any and all customs/duties/taxes/VAT required by your country’s laws.

How do I add the hook-and-loop custom backing upgrade to my pledge?

As far as upgrading to the hook-and-loop backing, you’ll need to increase the amount of your pledge by $2 per patch.

When the campaign ends successfully, I use a separate service called BackerKit to handle the fulfillment of the rewards. You’ll be sent a survey via BackerKit to verify your shipping address, and confirm your reward choice.

As part of that process, the funds you’ve pledged via Kickstarter are used as “credit” in the BackerKit survey. You’ll have the option to choose the hook-and-loop backing version of the patches for your reward (which will be priced $2 more per patch), and your Kickstarter-pledged funds will cover that upgrade.

If you do forget to do so during the campaign, you’ll be able to upgrade during the BackerKit survey and pay for the upgrade then.

How do I get patches from previous Kickstarter campaigns?

I use a separate service called BackerKit to help me fulfill the reward shipments, and as part of the backer survey you’ll have the opportunity to order any of my available patches, buttons, magnets or stickers from previous campaigns.

You will need to pay for these add-on items at that time, through BackerKit. The process is like any other online store, and it’s a seamless (and optional) part of the backer survey.

It’s a great way to save on shipping, since there are no additional shipping charges for add-on items purchased during the backer survey process!

How can I get multiple rewards, or a combo not offered here?

Pledge for the closest reward that you want, then edit your pledge amount by the multiple that you’d like. You’ll have the opportunity to “spend” that pledge amount as credit in the post-campaign fulfillment survey.

For example, if you want three of the patch 3-packs, just choose one as your reward, then multiply the pledge amount by 3 times.

You will only be charged shipping costs once.

If you want combos of items not offered as rewards (such as 10x a single patch design, or 2x a button set), again just calculate the estimated total amount and edit your pledge to cover that cost.

If anything is off, you’ll have a chance to revise it as part of the backer fulfillment survey after the campaign closes. That said, pledging while the campaign is live helps us reach the core funding goal and unlock stretch goals.

How do I pledge for all 3 main patches, the Elder Thing "Antarctic" color variant, and the stretch goal patches?

There is a reward level named “Patch 3-pack + Elder Thing: ‘Antarctic’”, and this reward gets you all 3 main patches, the Elder Thing “Antarctic” color variant, and the stretch goal patches.

How do I qualify for stretch goal patches?

Pledge for any reward that includes the “Patch 3-pack” listed as one of the reward items.

This would start with the rewards:

  • Patch 3-pack + stickers
  • Patch 3-pack + buttons
  • Patch 3-pack + Elder Thing: “Antarctic”

and all rewards above those also qualify for stretch goal items.

BackerKit FAQ

What is BackerKit?

BackerKit is a service that crowdfunded project creators use to keep track of hundreds to tens of thousands of backers—from shipping details, pledge levels, preferences and quantities, whether they have paid or had their card declined, special notes, and everything in between!

The BackerKit software and support team is independent from the campaign’s project team—BackerKit does not handle the actual reward shipping. For more information about the preparation or delivery status of your rewards, please check the project's updates page.

How does BackerKit work?

After the campaign ends, the project creator will send you an email with a unique link to your survey. You can check out a walkthrough of the process here.

I never received my invitation. How do I complete the survey?

The most common reasons for not receiving a survey email is that you may be checking an email inbox different from the email address you used to sign up with Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account, or it may be caught in your spam filter.

Confirm that the email address you are searching matches the email address tied to your Kickstarter, Indiegogo, or Tilt Pro account. If that doesn’t work, then try checking your spam, junk or promotions folders. You can also search for "backerkit” in your inbox.

To resend the survey to yourself, visit the project page and input the email address associated with your Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account.

How do I update my shipping address?

BackerKit allows you to update your shipping address until the shipping addresses are locked by the project creator. To update your address, go back to your BackerKit survey by inputting your email here.

When will my order be shipped, charged or locked?

That is handled directly by the project creator. BackerKit functions independently of the project itself, so we do not have control of their physical shipping timeline. If you want to check on the project’s status, we recommend reading over the project's updates page.

I completed the survey, but haven't received my rewards yet. When will they arrive?

As BackerKit does not actually handle any rewards or shipping, the best way to stay updated on the shipping timeline would be to check out the project's updates page.
